San Diego county health officials today reported another death linked to swine flu. The latest fatality was a 5-year-old girl with no underlying medical conditions. Meanwhile, most San Diego health care providers are still waiting for their shipments of H1N1 vaccine.
A week ago, some public clinics in San Diego began delivering swine flu vaccinations to members of high-risk groups. But many large private providers, including Scripps Health and Sharp HealthCare, have yet to receive or administer any vaccine for the H1N1 virus. Ken August, with the California Department of Public Health, said California has received several hundred thousand doses of swine flu vaccine. But he says providers receive their shipments directly from distributors. So it's hard for health departments to know who has the vaccine.
"But we know that vaccine is arriving and we encourage California residents to call their regular health care provider to see if he or she has vaccine available," he said.
August said more swine flu vaccine is expected to arrive each week over the course of the coming months.
