A toll-free information service at UCSD for pregnant and breastfeeding women is adding an online chat feature. It's designed to provide immediate answers about drugs and other potentially harmful exposures.
The CTIS information line offers advice to women who have questions about pregnancy or breastfeeding. The goal is to help women avoid exposures to things that could cause harm to their baby.
The service gets about 5,000 calls a year.
CTIS director Christina Chambers said the online chat feature will help women who prefer to use a computer.
"It's just a fantastic new way to use new technology for us to reach out to pregnant women or women who are considering pregnancy, to be able to get information from us in a way that they never have before," Chambers said.
The online service is available in English and Spanish. Chambers said all of the information is evidence-based.
