Survey Finds Widespread Dissatisfaction With Health Care System

Survey Finds Widespread Dissatisfaction With Health Care System
A broad majority of Californians say they're in good health. But there's widespread dissatisfaction with the state's health-care system.

A new survey reveals eight out of 10 Californians say they're in good health. But there's widespread dissatisfaction with the state's health care system.

The Public Policy Institute of California surveyed 2,500 people earlier this year.

Nearly 60 percent said the state's health-care system needs to be changed. A similar number felt there should be greater emphasis on disease prevention in their communities.

Institute President Mark Baldassare said people believe there are lots of factors that make up healthy neighborhoods.

"They're looking at the extent to which violence and street crime are issues, having grocery stores and restaurants with healthy food choices, and having places nearby where people can get exercise," Baldassare remarked.

The survey shows 70 percent of people living in households earning $80,000 or more a year say their health is good or excellent. Only 31 percent feel the same way in families making less than $40,000 annually.

The survey also finds that unlike the country as a whole, most Californians support health-care reform.
