Project Concern International Wins Grant To Expand Border Project
San Diego's Project Concern International has won a federal grant to expand a program that targets maternal health in the South Bay.

San Diego's Project Concern International has won a federal grant to expand its border health program. PCI is one of only nine groups nationwide to get an award.

PCI's border health program focuses on National City and Chula Vista. Volunteers help connect pregnant women with doctors, community clinics, and nutritional counseling.

PCI's Annette Gregg said many of their clients have recently arrived in the country.

"And they just don't understand the resources that are available to them," she explained. "The U.S healthcare system can be very complicated, and they could be missing out on a lot of free resources that will make a huge difference in their personal health, and the health of their babies."

Gregg said since the program began five years ago, it's helped to increase the percentage of moms who receive early prenatal care. The project also saw a reduction of low birth weight babies.

The new grant will allow the program to reach more than 110,000 women and their families.
