Italy's Prime Minister Resigns over Foreign Policy

Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi's government resigned today, after being defeated on a key foreign policy motion in the Senate.

The 9-month-old ruling coalition was deeply divided over numerous issues, both domestic and foreign. The fragile coalition, which included parties from the centrist Catholics to left wing radicals and communists, was defeated after some members refused to support Prime Minister Romano Prodi.

He has angered left-wingers because of his support for the commitment of Italian troops to Afghanistan and the expansion of a U.S. military base in Italy.
