The Taliban's most senior commander in Afghanistan has been killed in a U.S.-led raid in southern Helmand province. Mullah Dadullah reportedly suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the clash.
Dadullah was part of Taliban head Mullah Mohammed Omar's inner circle. The one-legged commander was revered by the Taliban for taking part in battles, and he masterminded many beheadings and suicide attacks in recent months.
The news came along with word that a gunfight had erupted along the Afghan-Pakistani border.
Afghan Defense Ministry says local tribesman joined Afghan troops in firing at Pakistani troops who he said had crossed into two southeastern Afghan provinces.
Spokesman Zaher Azimi says the battles erupted when the Pakistanis tried to set up checkpoints on the Afghan side of the border. Pakistani officials could not be reached for comment.
The Afghan spokesman says eight Pakistani soldiers were killed. A Pakistani official told the Associated Press that as many as seven Afghan troops were killed.
Two Afghan students who joined the fight were also fatally shot.
