San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Bill Kowba retires today. He's been with the district for seven years, the last three leading the second largest district in the state.
The 61-year-old former Navy admiral announced he would step down in February.
During his tenure, Kowba improved academic achievements during some tough economic times.
He will be replaced by Cindy Marten, the principal of Central Elementary School in City Heights.
