This is KPBS Midday Edition. I'm Maureen Cavanaugh. , Art, music, Father's Day and singing nuns are the featured edition of the weekend preview. You don't have to choose, we will be featuring one event for each day. Joining me is Nina Garin, KPBS arts calendar producer and editor. The new contemporaries exhibition is for everyone who's curious. It opens on Saturday, tell us about New Contemporaries 2016 exhibit . It's a great exhibit if you're curious about emerging artists in San Diego. It's an event that members from the arts community actually nominate artists that are working now. They put together an exhibition, then they have judges pick the winners. There were 11 artists selected, who is on the list? Some really great names, Shin pay to cater had a solo show, he does a lot of site-specific works that they deal with border issues. We have a girl named Paola Villasenor, she goes by Ponca, she is a colorful muralist from Tijuana. She's gotten national attention and she had her work featured at the San Diego Art Institute. You say, these artists are competing for a prize. What surprised? They get a cash prize, I don't know how much. It is a cash price. They also get to be men toward with some of San Diego's established artists. They get exhibition opportunities. I think they exhibit together with their mentoring artists. This year, they're going to have a People's choice award. You can go and vote for the one you like best. It lasts until July 14 Yes, that's the day they're going to announce the winners. You can see it. Saturday is the opening, it's also open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. New Contemporaries 2016 open Saturday. It's not just up-and-coming visual artists in musicians will be there. The Carlsbad music village festival lot. This is a great day long event, it's free, it's going to have all kinds of musicians playing in the streets of the Carlsbad Village. You can walk around and hear all sorts of artists, up and coming, everything. What kind of music? There's going to be the San Diego Opera soprano, a niche, the score above -- Anishka Lee-Skorepa. The euphoria brass band will also be there. [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] It's also an opportunity for people, I would imagine not only to find them is -- musicians, but to explore Carlsbad. Yes. The fun thing about this is that the musicians are performing in some of the venues. And restaurants, there's a concert at a record store. There's a show in a retirement community. You can either plan. The walk or just walk wherever you want. They were also have food trucks and a market. Carlsbad Village walk from 2:30 PM to 10 PM on Saturday through the Carlsbad Village. This is also Father's Day weekend. Lots of events happening on Sunday. A special one in Julian. James Hubbell opens his house to the public. James Hubbell is an internationally renowned architect an artist, he's influenced by nature and make these homes that look like they come out of Dr. Seuss or Lord of the rings, they encompass nature and have colorful glass. They are beautiful. Only once here, he opens it up to the community, you meet in the parking lot and caravan up there, because it's so remote. This is the weekend. It happens. What is his home look like -- what does his home look like? There are nine structures made out of Adobe, in 2003, there were eight structures, four of them were destroyed in the fire. Since then he is rebuilt them and added more. The money for this benefits a foundation, the Elon Lail foundation. It benefits public arts projects that are inspired by nature. They are responsible for, they built schools in Tijuana, they built oceanfront parks. It goes back into art. Yes. The Hubble home tour has two viewings, one of them. The afternoon is still available, if you want to go get them quickly. It usually is sold out on that day. You meet in the parking lot and caravan up. That tour starts at 1 PM. Moonlight Amphitheatre begins its summer season with sister act. It is based on the movie, "Sister Act the Musical", the woman who commits a crime and has to hide out. How has the musical version been received? The music is written by Alan Menken who is known for grading -- great musicals. In 2011. It was nominated for several Tony awards. It was well received and this is the San Diego, regional premiere. Let's hear a clip from the sister act, Tony performance. [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] The show at Moonlight Amphitheatre, Moonlight Amphitheatre is a summer tradition give us an idea what it's like. This is always a wonderful experience. It's far a few don't live in North County, you have to climb up huge hill, the theater opens up and it's gorgeous. You can bring picnics and you can hang out with the kids, you can sit on the lawn and drink wine or sit in the seat. There's always a fantastic musical. It's always just great. The lineup this year, after sister act, Peter Pan, Titanic the musical and the Adams family. "Sister Act the Musical" is running through July 2. James Hubbell Father's Day Open House

Thanks to their curved shapes and colorful accents, architect and artist James Hubbell creates homes that look like they come out of the pages of J.R.R. Tolkien or Dr. Seuss.
His own residence in Santa Ysabel, near Julian, is especially whimsical. And for more than 30 years, Hubbell and his wife, Anne Hubbell, have opened their nine-structure compound for public tours.
The couple continues the tradition on Sunday with showings at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. At the tour you'll be able to meet the artist and his family.

New Contemporaries 2016 SD Art Prize

If you're curious about what's happening in San Diego's visual arts scene, make sure to check out the New Contemporaries 2016 exhibit.
This annual event showcases the work of emerging local artists and awards two of them with a cash prize, mentorship with established artists and exhibition opportunities.
This year's nominees are Robert Andrade, William Feeney, Kim Garcia, Robert Michael Jones, Erin Dace Behling, Sasha Koozel Reibstein, Aren Skalman, Graham Smith, Shinpei Takeda, Paola Villasenor (PANCA) and Nicole Waszak.
The exhibit is up at the City College Gallery from Saturday, June 18 and closes on Thursday, July 14, with an awards presentation.

'Sister Act the Musical'

Moonlight Amphitheatre opens its summer season with the San Diego premiere of "Sister Act The Musical."
The feel-good musical comedy tells the story of a woman who is hidden in a convent after she witnesses a crime. While she's there she helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own.
The show, with music by Alan Menken, is based on the 1992 hit Whoopi Goldberg film.

Carlsbad Music Festival Village Walk

The Carlsbad Music Festival returns with a day of adventurous music by the beach.
Over 30 performers will take the stage at locations around the Carlsbad Village including San Diego Opera Soprano Anishka Lee-Skorepa, Euphoria Brass Band, Leila Adu, Carlsbad Music Festival Founder Matt McBane, Son de San Diego and more.
Walk around the village and explore new music and new shops. There will also be a beer garden, food trucks and an artisan market.
