Here's What You Should See, Taste And Drink In San Diego This Summer

This is KPBS Midday Edition I am Maureen Cavanaugh. There is a good chance you got your summer vacation plans already made. You're looking forward to getting out of town and seeing new sites and that can make the weeks go faster. Lots of people actually come here to spend their vacations. If you are like most locals, you have not seen all the big and small attractions that make San Diego such a great place to visit. San Diego city beat has compiled a summary guide 2018 just for San Diegan's of sights, sounds, food, entertainment, and places to snap the best selfie. Joining me is Seth Coombs editor of city beat. Whited city beat decide to make this list. You have included some pretty Captain obvious locations like the zoo and the hotel. Are these places a lot of San Diego residents have never checked out? >> The story goes like this. We had this intern from SDSU. She suggested like a when we do something that is a little bit more obvious. We started using the term cliché summer. Then we thought it was a little insulting. What we invent Chile -- eventually decided on was there a lot of places a lot of us even though we have lived here for years we haven't been too. For example, one of our writers went to the zoo. I always wanted to go to the Pro hotel and taken one of their dive in movies and some other people wanted to go to the Maritime Museum. These are people who have lived here for decades and have never gone to the spots that tourists actually come here for. We ended up calling it a tourist in our backyard. >>> Tell us about some your favorite summer places on the list. Spew my personal ones? I mentioned the Pearl Hotel. I ended up watching labyrinth with David Bowie it was really cool. For me it was like going to a place that I always heard cool things about. One of the places was El Indio the restaurant in Little Italy. It's in Mission Hills on the boarder. I heard that they invented the world Taco. Or taquitos. I went there and tried there rolled tacos. They've had them since the 1940s and I was really impressed. >>> One thing I liked about the list was you talked about the trolley that takes you on tours around the city. I have never been on that. >> This list is so varying that we have so many different things. One of the things I have never done, I'm almost ashamed to admit this was I never rode public transportation. I had taken the trolley to a concert before. I had never taken the bus anywhere. So I doubled it up. For one of the things I ended up doing, I ended up taking the bus they are. It was like an hour long ride. I found the experience to be enjoyable and awesome. I mentioned at the end that I would love it if MTS had a payment system for someone who was more a casual rider. Someone who has a car but also would like to get a discounted rate to ride the bus every now and again. I would have to give them credit because they have great buses. I would be down to ride it if it was a little more affordable. >>> You included Seaport Village, the ferry trip Coronado, I have to admit that I never heard about potato chip rock in Ramona. Do people find that they don't know about these events or landmarks? >> Potato chip rock is huge on Instagram. It is the place to take a selfie. The place that so many yoga enthusiasts and people of that ilk, they go there. they get themselves bending over on this rock. It looks extremely dangerous I have to point out. This is a very thin little rock that looks like it could break off the side of the mountain and crumble into the canyon. >>> You mentioned the concerts on the Bay summary guide. The way it's described is a beautiful location that has top name musical at. >> Humphreys is a treasure it's got great sound. They take their little dinghies and small kayaks and they pull up to the side of it and they catch the concert from outside the venue. It is frowned upon by the venue. At the same time they don't care. It is right by the Bay on Mission Bay or shelter Island. It is gorgeous. >>> Besides potato chip rock, you talk about the selfies. Selfies, Actual selfies where are the best places to take them ? >> I am partial to Chicano Park and barrio Logan, there are so many selfie were the things to take a picture of there. North Park with its murals, now there is a mural on every corner. That is where our web editor took his selfie because he always wanted to take a selfie in front of a mural and he ended up doing it at pigment in North Park. And they have like this big pink mural. There is just a few other around that neighborhood. How can you be in San Diego and not be in a spot that's good for a selfie. >>> I have been speaking with Seth Coombs and we have been talking about that magazine summer guide 2018 for San Diego.
