Organizers with the new "yes in my backyard" housing advocacy group in North County plan to hold a kick-off event Thursday.

California's relatively new YIMBY or "yes in my backyard" housing advocacy movement is hoping to make a mark in San Diego's North County.

On Thursday, organizers plan to hold the group's first kick-off event in Oceanside.

The movement grew out of the state's housing crisis. It was driven largely by the lack of enough new housing to meet demand. Members believe in saying "yes" to housing projects for all income levels in all communities, especially near transit.

James Contino, an Oceanside resident who is helping to launch the new group joins Midday Edition Wednesday to discuss what it means to be a YIMBY and the housing challenges in North County.
