County Making Changes To Address Slowing COVID-19 Vaccine Demand
KPBS health reporter Matt Hoffman joined Midday Edition on Monday to discuss how San Diego County is trying to adapt to the slowing demand for vaccines.

In San Diego County and across the nation, the rate of new COVID-19 cases continues to decrease while vaccinations increase.

In the county, 1 million people or nearly 54% of those who are eligible have been fully vaccinated. Anyone who is 16 and older is now eligible for the vaccine.

But there is still a concern as vaccination rates begin to slow and new variants continue popping up. It's forced San Diego County health officials to adopt a new strategy.

"Things are not going to stay constant so as the temperament of the general public changes, our strategies must change," Dr. Wilma Wooten, San Diego County Public Health Officer, said.

KPBS health reporter Matt Hoffman joined Midday Edition on Monday to discuss how the county is trying to adapt to the slowing demand, including offering walk-in appointments at its smaller locations, extending hours for vaccination locations and more.

Before joining KPBS, Brooke was a web editor for four newspapers and a local television station. She began her career in news at the Imperial Valley Press. She has also been part of the web teams at the Napa Valley Register, North County Times, and U-T San Diego. While pursuing her undergraduate degree at UCLA in psychology, she worked on the student newspaper, the Daily Bruin.
