Five popular San Diego restaurants have made their way into the 2021 version of the prestigious Michelin guide.

The new all-California Michelin restaurant guide is right around the corner and some San Diego restaurants have already been added to its list.

Animae in Downtown, Callie in East Village, Fort Oak in Mission Hills, Little Frenchie in Coronado and Menya Ultra in Kearny Mesa, Mira Mesa and Hillcrest were all awarded "The Plate."

The designation indicates that a given restaurant serves "very good food," and marks the entry into the Michelin system.

The all-California guide was started in 2019 but was forced to suspend publication in 2020 due to the pandemic.

The return of the guide this year is a sign of hope for the restaurant industry as it struggles to get back on its feet.

Pam Kragen, who covers dining for The San Diego Union-Tribune, joined Midday Edition on Tuesday to talk about the San Diego restaurants awarded "The Plate."
