A second organization is calling for the removal of a cross that stands on Camp Pendleton.
The North County Times reports Americans United for Separation of Church and State has joined the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers in demanding the Marines remove the cross from its hillside spot on the base, saying its very existence is unconstitutional.
Ian Smith of AUSCS wrote to base commander Col. Nick Marano:
Shannon Book was among the small group of Iraq war veterans - and one Iraq War widow - who put up the cross to recognize the service of fallen Marines. He tells the North County Times the cross needs to stay exactly where it is:
Do you think the cross should be allowed to stand where it is? Would you feel the same way if it were a Star of David, or Crescent Moon? Why or why not?
