The military has released the name of the Marine found dead Monday morning in his MCRD San Diego barracks. He was Lance Cpl. Martin Lopez Jr., 20, of Phoenix, Arizona.
MCRD San Diego spokesman Major Mike Armistead told Phoenix television station KPHO-TV that a fellow Marine found Lance Cpl. Lopez unresponsive in his room early Monday. Medical personnel pronounced Lopez dead at 6:20 a.m.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating the young Marine's death.
According to the Marine Corps Times, Lopez enlisted in June 2009. He served as a finance technician assigned to Service Company, Headquarters and Service Battalion.
During his service, Lopez was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
