Memorial Day in San Diego will feature appearances by Republican presidential candidates past and present and the traditional military service at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
At 10 a.m., presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney and the 2008 candidate, Sen. John McCain, are scheduled to pay tribute to members of the armed services at the Veterans Museum & Memorial Center.
The public is welcome to the free event, but must have tickets.
The former Massachusetts governor and Salt Lake City Olympics boss is a part-time La Jolla resident.
The Fort Rosecrans service is also set to begin at 10 a.m. The featured speaker will be Lt. Gen. Thomas Waldhauser, commander of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force and Marine Central Command.
Other organizations holding ceremonies will be:
-- the Veterans Association of North County, at 10 a.m. at their Resource Center, 1617 Mission Ave. in Oceanside;
-- the Rancho Coastal Humane Society, which will honor military working dogs at 11 a.m. at Cricket's Corner Dog Park, 389 Requeza St. in Encinitas;
-- the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum, at 1 p.m. at 910 N. Harbor Drive; and
-- the Mount Soledad Memorial Association, at 2 p.m. at the memorial cross, 7040 Soledad Park Road.
