Iraq War veteran and Marine Corps Sgt. Jamel Herring was eliminated from the Olympic Games after losing his boxing match to Daniyar Yeleussinov of Kazakhstan in the first round of the welterweight division.
BoxingScene.com reports Herring was the first active-duty Marine to make the U.S. Olympic boxing team since 1992.
Despite his loss, Herring kept things positive for his team. After all, he's USA Men's Boxing's team captain. Herring told the Associated Press:
"You've got to keep them uplifted. I don't want anyone to feel down."
According to the Department of Defense, Herring has previously won silver medal at the 2010 World Military Games, was 2011 Armed Forces Champion, the 2012 USA Boxing National Champion, and the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials Champion.
North Carolina television station WITN-TV did a profile of the Camp Lejeune-based Herring the day of his boxing match. I've posted it above for your viewing pleasure.
