The deadline for veterans and active-duty service members to apply for retroactive stop-loss pay is October 21.
Under the 2009 War Supplemental Appropriations Act, troops whose military service was involuntarily extended in the time period between September 11, 2001 and September 30, 2009 are eligible for what's called Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay - $500 for each month or part of a month the service member was in the military under the stop-loss policy.
Beneficiaries of service members are also eligible for stop-loss pay.
The Department of Defense estimates the average benefit owed to those who've served is roughly $3,700.
