Navy Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Andrew Sanders, 22, died September 29 after running in the Navy Birthday Beast 60 Mile Relay in Agana Heights, Guam.
According to a Navy news release:
Following lifesaving efforts by fellow hospital corpsmen and local first-responders, Sanders was transported to the Naval Hospital where ongoing resuscitative efforts were unsuccessful.
Doctors pronounced Sanders dead at the U.S Naval Hospital Guam emergency room at 2:15 p.m. local time.
Capt. Jeff Plummer, Naval Hospital commanding officer, released a statement upon learning of Sanders' death:
"The entire Naval Hospital family is mourning the tragic loss of HM3 Sanders. In a short five months aboard, this impressive young corpsman was a leader across the command and throughout the community."
Sanders grew up in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. He is survived by his mother and father, Sabrina and Joseph Sanders III.
The Navy is investigating the cause of Sanders' death.
