SAN DIEGO (Jan. 26, 2015) – The amphibious transport dock ship USS Green Bay (LPD 20) departs San Diego for Sasebo, Japan

USS Green Bay (LPD 20) left San Diego on Monday for its new home of Sasebo, Japan.

The USS Green Bay, a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship, will replace the decommissioned USS Denver (LPD 9), an Austin-class amphibious transport dock ship.

The USS Green Bay will become part of the 7th Fleet's Forward Deployed Naval Forces.

And while the ship has always been homeported in San Diego, the USS Green Bay also has a tight bond with its namesake city - and the Green Bay Packers, according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette:

[It's] the only ship in the U.S. Navy with a flight deck named Lambeau Field. Packers-themed touches abound on board — everything from a street sign for Reggie White Way to Packers bedding and a commanding officer who has been known to quote Vince Lombardi.

No word if this long-distance love affair will continue as the USS Green Bay heads to Japan, adding even more miles between the ship and its namesake city. It seems likely, though, if you watch this feature on the USS Green Bay that aired on Today back in November of 2014:
