Los Angeles Times editor Dean Baquet, who has been at odds with his bosses at The Tribune Co. over his refusal to make cuts in the newsroom staff, is leaving the newspaper.
The Chicago-based Tribune Co. has sought to pump up profits at the Times, one of the nation's largest and most prestigious papers.
Baquet, who has been at the paper since 2000, stayed on after its former publisher was fired. But he said he wouldn't accept cuts.
The paper's new publisher, David Hiller, said earlier this week that it would need to scale back some of its ambitions, hinting that more cuts might be on the way.
The Times has seen its circulation drop, and it is less profitable than the namesake Chicago Tribune of its parent company -- the Times operates on profit margins in the low 20s rather than close to 30, as does the Tribune.
