In northern Arizona, the 68-year-old Arizona Snowbowl, just north of Flagstaff, is stuck in a long-running dispute with a local Indian tribe over whether the skiing facility can begin making snow.
The tribe says the ski area is on a sacred Indian mountain, and snow-making would harm the environment. But those in the skiing industry say they are losing money by being forced to open later each year as snowfall diminishes. All sides are awaiting a decision from the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals that could determine whether snow-making can go ahead.
