FBI Chief Chastised in Senate Panel Hearing

Senators buffeted FBI Director Robert Mueller with complaints about his agency's misuse of terrorist surveillance laws and other flaws at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing today.

Mueller spoke to the Senate panel just one week after the Justice Department's inspector general told the committee that the FBI illegally demanded phone and business records related to tens of thousands of Americans.

Mueller fought to persuade the committee that he can fix the problem. He described new policies that he has put in place to make sure the FBI follows the rules when it sends a demand for records, known as National Security Letters.

In addition to those charges, Mueller also defended his agency against accusations of incompetence related to the FBI's failure to account for all of its laptops and weapons.
