Wall Breached, Palestinians Stream Into Egypt

Tens of thousands of Palestinians poured across a border wall between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, seeking supplies made scarce by an Israeli blockade. After masked men destroyed much of a seven-mile wall, Egyptian authorities stood by as the Palestinians entered the city of Rafah, returning home with food, fuel and cigarettes.

An Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman said that while Israel is concerned by the chaos, the country has no forces on the Gaza-Egypt border — and that it is Egypt's responsibility to control the situation.

The border-wall breach came six days after Israel imposed a complete closure on Gaza, bringing reports of fuel and food shortages, and a lack of power.
