Republican State Senator Joel Anderson said CalTrans wastes far too much money – and he’s calling on Gov. Jerry Brown to shift responsibility for transportation projects to local governments.
“What we want to do is realign the money and localize it so that it’s closest to the people and most effective,” Anderson said.
Anderson represents parts of San Diego and Riverside Counties. He said the state can save more than $2 billion by restructuring CalTrans – though he’s declining to share any ideas on how it could be done.
“There’s many ways of structuring it, and I don’t want to handcuff and micromanage the governor,” Anderson said.
CalTrans overpays its employees and is too inefficient with taxpayer funds, according to Anderson.
A statement from CalTrans said the agency has already taken steps to improve its efficiency. It also said that in the last five years, it’s completed all but three of its nearly 14,000 highway improvement projects on time.
