The Blue Team at Memorial Pool in Logan Heights is the last city-funded, competitive swim squad in San Diego. The team was set to disband at the end of June when its city funding ran out.
But the Junior Lifeguard Foundation stepped forward with a $15 thousand donation that will keep the team going through at least March of next year. Corey McClelland is the Foundation’s President and CEO. He said the team was a good fit.
“It’s perfect for the foundation because that’s what we try to do,” he said. “(We) promote aquatic safety through swimming and it can be competitive swimming, or free swim lessons.”
Councilman David Alvarez from District Eight, where Memorial Pool is located, said the program will be evaluated at the end of this summer. If the team decides to continue on, his office will cover the rest of the cost, which totals about $22,000 for the entire year. The team will still have to figure out funding for future years.
