Council To Vote On Balboa Park Makeover Plan
The full San Diego City Council will consider a controversial plan to transform Plaza De Panama today. A multi-million dollar makeover to remove cars from the plaza is at stake.

The project would route traffic coming into the park from the Cabrillo Bridge around the Museum of Man. The new access road would keeps cars out of the Plaza de Panama. It also includes the construction of a new parking garage behind the Speckles Organ Pavilion.

The plan has received the support of Mayor Jerry Sanders and Qualcomm Founder Irwin Jacobs, who vowed to raise $25 million for the project.

But historic preservationists have blasted the plan and it has received lukewarm support at City Hall.

The council Rules Committee voted to move it to the full council without a recommendation. Jacobs has stepped back from the project while the city sorts out whether it wants to go forward. The council will weigh in this afternoon.
