San Diegans To Remember Trayvon Martin With Rally and March

A rally, march and candlelight vigil to honor a Florida boy shot to death by a neighborhood watch volunteer will be held in downtown San Diego today.

The Justice for Trayvon Martin Rally and March is set to begin at 5 p.m. in Balboa Park.

At 6 p.m., participants are expected to march to the federal building at 880 Front St., where the rally will resume and a candlelight vigil will be held at 7 p.m.

Martin, 17, was killed on Feb. 26 in Sanford, Fla., by George Zimmerman, who admitted to the shooting but told police he fired in self-defense. Sanford police said physical evidence from the scene supported his claim, and he was not arrested.

However, both a Florida state task force and the U.S. Justice Department are now looking into the incident.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
