Sanders left no doubt about his feelings regarding DeMaio. Sanders was holding a news conference on the May budget revision when a reporter asked him what he thought about DeMaio taking credit for financial reforms as he campaigns for mayor.

Sanders responded frankly.

"He probably takes credit for my weight loss," he said. "He probably takes credit for the weeds I pulled in the backyard last week. It’s all bulls---."

Sanders went onto say DeMaio’s claims that the city is wasting millions of dollars aren’t true.

"I am not a candidate for anything so I don’t have to make up things," he said. "I don’t have to be on a political doomsday tour to make people think it’s worse than it actually is."

Sanders is backing District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis for mayor. He was announcing the restoration of city services following increased revenues. Reached for response, DeMaio said he’s just going to focus on the progress the city’s made.

"This budget only confirms what we’ve said all along, that if you reform city departments, you can balance the budget without tax increase," DeMaio said.

Last month DeMaio issued a news release stating he believes the city will still be $50 million in debt in the coming year.
