Beginning in 2013, San Diego City Councilman Kevin Faulconer will hold the title of the longest serving member on the council. He’s been in office for about seven years. He and his three fellow Republicans make up a minority on the council. Faulconer said his party will strike a balance on working with the Democrats.
"When you look at policies that make sense, I think you are going to see strong, bi-partisan support," he said. "I also think people, like myself, will stand up and be vocal, either pro or con, if we need to, in terms of what’s in the best interest of the city or the taxpayers."
Faulconer had served as Council President Pro Tem, the second in command on the council, for the past four years. But new Council president Todd Gloria has proposed Councilwoman Sherri Lighter serve in that role instead. Still, Faulconer said he’s proud of the bi-partisan relationship he formed while in the position.
"This year I’m going to be working very hard to ensure that a lot of the reforms that we have worked on, that the council has supported, that the mayor has supported, to ensure that we move forward. Guard our taxpayer dollars; protect our neighborhoods and our beaches and bays," he said. "To me, that’s not a partisan issues, that’s common sense, what we should be doing for the City of San Diego."
Faulconer will still chair the city’s audit committee. He will also serve on the budget, rules and economic development committees.
