San Diego City Councilman Mark Kersey may enter the 2018 race for the California State Senate. Filings with the California Secretary of State show he has formed a campaign committee.
The councilman lives in Black Mountain Ranch, which is on the edge of Senate District 38. The district is currently represented by Republican Joel Anderson, who cannot run again because of term limits.
Kersey, also a Republican, was re-elected to the City Council in June 2016 with more than 70 percent of the vote. If he were to win the Senate race next year, the council would have to call a special election to replace him.
Attempts to reach Kersey for comment on Tuesday were unsuccessful.
Republican and former state Assemblyman Brian Jones has also entered the race for the 38th Senate district.
