Gruesome drug cartel violence has kicked up again in Tijuana. At least 30 people have been killed in the last five days.

The murders are an echo of the unprecedented wave of violence that gripped Tijuana at this time last year.

That historic rash of killings calmed down after the leader of the Arellano Felix drug cartel and the renegade lieutenant he was warring with declared a truce.

But in the last few weeks, the murder rate has ramped up again as has the level of gruesomeness.

Tuesday morning, authorities found three decapitated bodies in an industrial area in Tijuana’s southeast. Another was found across town in an abandoned vehicle. Monday, a dead man was found hanging from a bridge on the Tijuana-Rosarito highway.

Baja California’s Attorney General says many of the dead are street level drug dealers. Notes left with some of the bodies found recently suggest the truce between the warring drug groups has ended.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
