Officer-Involved Shooting Closes Lanes At Border Crossing

An officer-involved shooting has partially shut down northbound lanes at the San Ysidro Border Crossing.

The international liaison for the Baja California Attorney General's office, Jesus Quinones, says preliminary information indicates a Customs and Border Protection agent fired seven shots at an Avalanche vehicle after the driver disobeyed the agent's order to stop the vehicle.

Quinones says the driver was rushed to a San Diego hospital. Quinones says there were drugs in the car. He says three northbound lanes remain closed, lanes 22 through 24.

US Customs and Border Protection spokesman Vince Bond says the shooting happened just before 9 a.m. He says the driver was alone in the car.

He says a CBP agent apparently shot the male driver after he'd crossed the border. Bond said he could not provide more details due to the San Diego Police Homicide team's investigation.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences.
