San Diego homicide detectives today were investigating the fatal shooting of a 42-year-old wanted man in Miramar by state parole agents.
The agents, working with San Diego police detectives, tracked the fugitive to a hotel in the 9300 block of Kearny Villa Road at about 6 p.m. on Wednesday, SDPD homicide Lt. Ernie Herbert said. He was wanted in connection with a commercial burglary and for an alleged parole violation, according to the lieutenant.
As the agents were preparing to surround the hotel and call him out of his room, the man came out on his own with a woman shortly after 7 p.m., Herbert said.
The couple walked to a parked car and two parole agents with the California Parole Apprehension Team confronted the man as he was about to get in the driver's seat, Herbert said, adding that the agents identified themselves and ordered the man to comply but instead, he opened the car door and appeared as if he was going to get in.
He then allegedly turned toward the agents suddenly and pointed a gun at them.
"Fearing for their lives, both agents fired their weapons at the (man)," Herbert said. "(He) was struck by the gunfire and was transported to a local trauma center."
The man died at 8 p.m. in the hospital. His female companion, 29-year-old Jillian Cini, was arrested on suspicion of parole violation, Herbert said.
The state parole agents involved in the shooting are three and 11-year veterans of their departments, according to Herbert. Their names were withheld.
