San Diego County sheriff's homicide detectives today investigated the death of an 8-month-old boy killed in a dog attack at a Lemon Grove home from which three pit bulls were later confiscated, authorities said.
The attack in the 3500 block of West Street was reported around 4:50 p.m. Thursday, said San Diego County sheriff's homicide Lt. Larry Nesbit.
Deputies and Lemon Grove Fire Department paramedics arrived within four minutes and found a woman holding a seriously injured infant, he said. He was taken to Rady Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:06 p.m.
"Because the incident involved the sudden or unexpected death of an infant, the sheriff's homicide detail was requested and assumed the investigation,'' Nesbit said in a statement.
Investigators interviewed residents of the home in the 3500 block of West Street and animal control officers confiscated three "apparent pit bulls,'' Nesbit said. It was not immediately clear how many of them may have taken part in the attack.
The infant's name was not immediately released.
