Person Shot By SDPD Officer Dies; Authorities Capture Second Suspect After Standoff

A person was fatally shot by a San Diego police officer near San Diego State University Thursday, and authorities have taken one person into custody following lengthy standoff and search.

At least one San Diego police officer opened fire just before 1 p.m. while trying to serve a search warrant near the Villa Del Sol Apartments in the 5400 block of Reservoir Drive, just east of San Diego State University, according to SDPD public affairs Lt. Andra Brown.

Multiple law enforcement agencies were at the location serving a warrant when the shooting broke out. Details of the warrant and what led to the shooting remain unclear.

Following the gunfire, officers evacuated people from the apartment building where it occurred and searched the complex and surrounding neighborhood for a second suspect.

A SWAT team was summoned to the scene, and the nearby Alvarado Hospital at 6655 Alvarado Rd. was locked down as a precaution, according to police dispatchers.

Just before 3 p.m., authorities were able to apprehend the second suspect at an apartment complex on Montezuma Road.

SDSU, which began classes Thursday, was not locked down during the search.
