UPDATE: 2:45 p.m., Aug. 20, 2019:
A Torrey Highlands couple found dead in their home over the weekend apparently were slain by their son, who then killed himself by jumping off a freeway overpass, authorities reported Monday.
Officers responding to a report of an apparent suicide on Interstate 805 in Sorrento Valley found the body of the suspected familial murderer on the roadway shortly before 2 a.m. Friday, according to police. Investigators determined that he had jumped off the Eastgate Mall bridge, Lt. Martha Sainz said.
About 10 p.m. Saturday, patrol personnel conducting a welfare check at a house in the 7400 block of Via Rivera, just south of state Route 56, found a man and woman in their 50s dead under suspicious circumstances inside their residence.
The husband and wife -- who had been expected in San Francisco earlier in the day but failed to arrive, prompting concerned family members to call the police -- had suffered traumatic injuries to their upper bodies, Sainz said. Their suspected cause or causes of death have not been released.
Homicide investigators believe that the man who leaped off the freeway overpass east of UC San Diego murdered his parents in their home -- why was unknown -- and then took his own life, Sainz said.
"Detectives will continue investigating this case to determine a motive for the homicides," the lieutenant said.
The names of the deceased were being withheld pending family notification.
