The clean energy revolution is here. Solar, wind and batteries are the cheapest form of power on the planet, lowering costs, creating new jobs, and strengthening our communities. But some politicians and industries are trying to hold it back. Across the country, Sun Day action participants will celebrate the progress we’ve made and push for more. Together, we’ll make the sun rise on our clean energy future. Leading up to these efforts, on Saturday, September 13 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. we will celebrate a family-friendly Sun Day Picnic for our Solar Future with speeches, games, music and general merriment. This is a coalition event hosted by Interfaith Coalition for Earth Justice, SanDiego350, GreenFaith, and Third Act SoCal.

Learn to throw ceramics on a wheel! Thursdays, September 11, 18, 25, October 2 & 16 from 6 – 8:30 p.m., with the last class of the series from 6 – 9pm In this 5-week wheel-throwing course, Ceramicist Briena Chavez guides students looking to build a solid foundation in ceramics while progressively developing their skills. This class is perfect for beginners and those who want to refine their techniques through a guided approach. Throughout the course, students will learn fundamental throwing techniques, trimming, altering forms, and glazing, gaining confidence on the wheel while creating functional pottery. Each week introduces a new skill that builds on the previous one, ensuring steady growth and mastery of key pottery concepts. Select a date: September 26, 1-3 p.m. In this first beginner sewing class students will learn how to thread a sewing machine, wind a bobbin, sew a straight stitch and pivot a corner. We will construct a pillow case together. You will also learn some very basic info about fabrics. If time allows for each student you will also learn how to finish your raw edges of the fabric using a zigzag stitch. You will leave class with a finished pillowcase. All materials are included. It’s best to learn on your own sewing machine, but you may also borrow one of ours. ***If you’re attending with your child, and participating only as support, just purchase 1 enrollment. Learn to Sew & Hem! September 19, 1-3 p.m. This class is a continuation of the Family and Beginner Sewing 101. In this next series, Instructor Hannah Gioutlos will guide you through the process of sewing a drawstring backpack. We will learn how to place our pattern on your fabric and cut it out with scissors or a rotary cutter. Then we will show tips on using a seam gauge to find the hem allowance. Next we will learn the proper way to press our fabric into place to get ready for hemming. For students who complete this project early, you can also learn to sew a pet bandana for your furry friends. All materials are included. Adults and age 7+ (with adult) welcome! REQUIREMENT: If you are new to using a sewing machine, you must take Family & Beginner Sewing 101 | Sewing Machine Basics first. September 28, 1-4 p.m. Come and explore the gorgeous natural blue of indigo in this hands-on natural dye workshop. You will learn a range of shibori dye resist processes in this creative workshop, including tegumo (spiderweb), ori nui (stitched), and itajime (clamped) shibori methods. You will also have the unique opportunity to work on a large and light organic cotton shawl (can be used as a bed cover). This textile will be approximately 40″ x 65″ and you’ll embellish it through shibori methods, followed by dyeing it in a natural indigo vat. You will gain a better understanding of the process and symbiotic relationship between indigo dye and this traditional textile surface design. This is a unique opportunity to learn the basic techniques to continue your journey into creating beautiful, unique textiles. Materials fee: $10 (cash) to be paid to instructor at the start of the workshop. This class is appropriate for ages 14+ years old. This class is designed for beginners as well as returning students. On the museum’s second Saturday of Hispanic Heritage Month, visitors can enjoy a vibrant mix of hands-on and educational activities. Guests will have the chance to make traditional Lele dolls, view and learn about live snakes native to Mexico and Latin America with an expert herpetologist/environmentalist , and attend a fascinating lecture on the legalities surrounding pre-Columbian art. Each Saturday in September highlights the richness of Hispanic culture, with engaging displays featuring Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, the historic Lemon Grove Incident, Peru, and more. Upcycle Your Own Item! Learn to Carve & Block Print! Choose from: Thursday, October 2, 6-8 p.m. or Thursday, November 6, 6-8 p.m. Have you ever wanted to print your own designs on shirts and bags?! In this 2-hour workshop, you’ll learn the art of relief printing! Students will learn to design and carve their own linoleum stamp and block print an image onto fabric. We invite you to upcycle fabric from your own wardrobe or home for this class, so grab a well-loved favorite item or something that could use a fun refresh and begin imagining some fun designs you might carve and print! Because this class focuses on upcycling, please bring your own fabric to block print on. This can be clothing, a tote bag or something else. You may bring more than one item and the instructor can help you choose which to print on in class. We recommend you avoid fabrics that are especially thin, like satins and silks. All other tools and materials needed for this class will be supplied for use. Learn to Weave! Sunday, September 28, from 2-6 p.m. Join us for an afternoon of fiber friendship and camaraderie. Weaving is an ancient craft; it shelters and clothes as well as adorns our spaces, adding texture, color, design and inspiration to our lives. And it is the actual process of weaving, along with selecting fibers, natural objects; guiding weft through the vertical foundation of warp strings; creating pattern/texture as the process unfolds…these steps continue to connect us with the past, and more importantly, with ourselves. Join in this weaving workshop as we weave intuitively and work together in a space of creativity and openness. Instructor Jeanine Ertl will provide guidance in a variety of weaving techniques and will surround you with warped looms to work on, tools to learn with, natural fibers, and foraged and gathered natural objects to incorporate into your weavings. Feel free to bring your own items to weave into your piece, especially if there are any fibers/yarns, stones/crystals, shells, leaves/grasses, etc. that you’d like to experiment with. Each weaver will complete a one-of-a-kind woven textile. We’ll have rods on hand for those who would like to adapt their pieces into wall hangings. No experience necessary. Ages 14+ welcome! Make Tiny Ceramics! Saturday, September 20, 10 a.m. - Noon Join us in the land of miniatures. You will learn how and get to create tiny pottery on a mini pottery wheel. No previous pottery experience necessary! In this 2-hour class, you will learn to create 1-3 tiny pots and can add some color if you would like to. You will learn how to center the clay and open it up to form tiny pots, bowls, or plates. This class is a great way to learn the basics of a wheel on a small scale. It is less intimidating and is an accessible way to throw and center clay. Grab a friend or family member who’s been curious about ceramics and come join me in creating tiny pottery! Projects will be ready to pick up 3-4 weeks after class. No experience necessary. Ages 12+ welcome!
