In this 2-hour workshop, you will work with quartz, aventurine, turquoise, jasper, amethyst, jade, lapis, agate, freshwater pearls, crystals and accent beads. Learn basic wire-wrapping techniques and how to attach stones onto a chain. Gain skills using three essential tools–flat nose pliers, round nose pliers and cutters. Be enlightened by the healing properties and the meanings behind the stones. Create patterns and schemes for your boho chic bracelet that fits your individual personal style. No tools are needed. November 7, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Join us in the woodshop for this 4-hour brush making workshop! We will cover shop safety and how to use various machines such as the bandsaw, spindle sander, edge sander, and drill press. You will hone your carving skills by adding curves and texture to your piece. We will build upon machine knowledge and cover wood shaping using various hand tools such as rasps, files, spoke shaves, hand planes, chisels, and gouges. We will also discuss design principles, functional applications, the properties of wood, and brush materials such as Tampico fibers. At the end of the workshop, each student will leave with a unique brush to be used in the home, the shop, or as a beautiful sculpture or gift. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring their own eye protection, ear protection & apron. Aprons for sale here. No experience necessary. Ages 18+ welcome. Navigating Culture, Language, & Preforming Arts in Disney's Live Action 'Moana' The release of Disney’s live-action "Moana" film involved local expertise and talent from CSUSM and our surrounding area in San Diego and greater Southern California. Audiences will learn about the making of the film through the perspectives of the Oceanic Cultural Trust, a group created by the film company to serve as cultural consultants on Oceanic language and performing arts. CSUSM faculty Dr. Grant Muagututi’a served as the lead cultural consultant for the film. His work focuses on the need for Oceanic language conservation efforts through mainstream popular media, independent documentary film, community partnership programming, and in higher education institutions both locally and abroad. He, along with others involved in the film, will offer reflections on their specific roles in making the live-action film. Members of the Oceanic Cultural Trust and actors from the film will engage audiences with behind-the-scenes stories and live-action musical and dance performances exclusively for CSUSM to inspire everyone to reimagine how grassroots cultural arts education can shape more inclusive experiences of higher education and impact popular media representations. The Library's Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 4 to October 23. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. On September 18, we will have Amy Kanner on the harp. The music of the harp is simply ethereal and enchanting, transporting us to another world. Playing the harp is Amy Kanner's passion! She is grateful to her parents who surrounded her with music and enrolled her in her first piano lessons at seven. Classically trained in both piano and violin, she continued these studies at Oberlin College in Ohio. But when she first heard the Celtic harp many years later, it was love at first sight and sound. She loves sharing the magic of the harp with audiences throughout San Diego — from school programs, weddings, and holiday celebrations, to service organizations and arts festivals. Amy is also a graduate of the International Harp Therapy Program (IHTP), created and taught by master harpist Christina Tourin — the IHTP is a year-long study of how to use the deep resonance of the harp to powerfully impact our well-being on the levels of body, mind, and spirit.
