Learn to needle felt! Sunday, August 23, from 9-11 a.m. Butterflies — those delightful, flying little splashes of color — are the inspiration for today’s class! In this 2-hour workshop, you’ll learn the basics of needle-felted painting by layering colored wool on the wings of your precut butterfly shape using special needles. Because the needles are quite pointed, this class is open to students aged 12 and up — protective guards will be on hand to keep fingers safe. When you’re done, take it home as a wearable brooch or a charming piece of wall art. No prior experience needed. All are welcome, ages 12 and older. Create your own fun egg tray! Mondays, July 20 & August 3, from 6-8:30 p.m. Ages 15+ welcome! In this 2-part series, students will learn the basics of handbuilding to create functional and fun pieces. Working with mid-fire clay, we will explore handbuilding forms and decorative techniques to create a one-of-a-kind ceramic egg tray. Students will create and build their piece in the first class and glaze their creations in the second class. Students will learn the art of glazing, with many decorative techniques. Students will be able to utilize a wide array of glazes and colors in this course. Beginners welcome! All materials provided. Additional optional materials available via the instructor for a fee. Meet aja monet aja monet Bacquie is a Brooklyn-born, Cuban-Jamaican poet, musician, and activist. Her work explores themes of love, gender, justice, and spirituality. At 19, she became the youngest Grand Slam Champion in the history of the Nuyorican Poets Café. Monet's debut poetry collection, "My Mother Was a Freedom Fighter," was nominated for an NAACP Image Award in 2018. Meet Def Sound Def Sound (born Emmanuel "Def Sound" Ricketts) is an Afro-Caribbean, post-binary transdisciplinary artist, poet, and producer based in South Central, Los Angeles. On Friday, September 25, Songwriter Sanctuary San Diego returns to Normal Heights United to host its first Hispanic / Latine Heritage Month celebration, presented in partnership with alumni artist and guest emcee Julia Sage. Featured artists include Good Gravy Street Blues, Rey Wolf, and Nathan & Jessie. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with featured music at 7 p.m. Prior to the show: An unplugged/acoustic “Pre-Show Pantry Jam” (artist to be announced) will take place on the sidewalk stage just outside the venue from 6-6:30 p.m. Guests are invited to enjoy music as they contribute unopened/unexpired food or gently used clothing to NHU’s community pantry, fridge, and closet. About the Featured Artists Good Gravy Street Blues Good Gravy is a street band heavily influenced by the bluesmen/women of the 30’s & 40’s. Good Gravy’s flavor can be described as a modern approach to American roots music or Americana. Within their recipe are the remnants of blues, bluegrass, folk, and jazz. Captivating melodies, thick vocals, and intriguing dynamics, this band’s imagination is fresh in the live music scene. Rey Wolf Rey Wolf is the latest project from songwriter Stephen El Rey, shaped by a cinematic sense of his own past and the shadowed corners of American music traditions. Born in Victorville, CA and raised in San Diego, Rey cut his teeth busking the streets of San Francisco and L.A. before landing a publishing deal with Warner Chappell, with songs placed in film and television including Embrace of the Vampire. His sound draws from a childhood in El Centro, where jukeboxes spun Mexican love songs, Johnny Cash, and 50s rock and roll. Rey Wolf channels those roots into something darker and more restless, moving between jazz noir, border town blues, Chicano soul, and unpredictable rock and roll with a crooner’s edge. Nathan & Jessie Music with a spirit of beauty, spontaneity, dance, and jazz improvisation! From the city where they sun shines through the mist, Temecula, California, comes the jazzy folk duo Nathan & Jessie. Born of the individuals, Nathan Rivera and Jessie Andra Smith, this duo is a unique blend of jazzy folk and blues on resonator guitars and accordion, along with interesting interplay between male and female vocals. Their performances not only include unique all original music, but stories of their travels and interaction with the audience that make for an unforgettable experience. This August 27, join Library Shop SD at our Mission Hills location for a conversation with Elizabeth DeLozier and KPBS’ Julia Dixon Evans on "The Whitechapel Full Moon Society," the new novel from the author of "Eleanor of Avignon." This event will include a conversation, Q&A, and author signing. Proceeds from all book sales support the San Diego Public Library. ABOUT THE BOOK Set in Victorian London during Jack the Ripper’s reign of terror, this gripping, original novel is perfect for fans of V. E. Schwab, Dana Schwartz, and Sarah Penner. When Caroline Foster arrives at the Whitechapel Full Moon Society in search of her missing brother, she finds a dilapidated façade belying an interior as opulent as any exclusive gentlemen’s club. In exchange for room and board, Caroline is hired as the Full Moon’s maid, where she is given three orders: don’t ask personal questions, stay out of the iron-barred room on the second floor, and remain in her bedroom from sunup to sundown on the full moon. Julia Dixon Evans hosts KPBS’ arts and culture podcast, "The Finest," writes the KPBS Arts newsletter, produces and edits the KPBS/Arts Calendar and works with the KPBS team to cover San Diego’s diverse arts scene. Previously, Julia wrote the weekly Culture Report for Voice of San Diego and has reported on arts, culture, books, music, television, dining, the outdoors and more for The A.V. Club, Literary Hub and San Diego CityBeat. She studied literature at UCSD (where she was an oboist in the La Jolla Symphony), and is a published novelist and short fiction writer. She is the founder of "Last Exit," a local reading series and literary journal, and she won the 2019 National Magazine Award for Fiction. Learn to needle felt a 3D Kitten! Sunday, June 14, 1-5 p.m. Learn to create a three-dimensional needle-felted Itty Bitty Kitty with wool! This 3-D sculpted wool needle-felted workshop is as fun and amazing as the project looks! Suitable for the novice felter, each student will learn the basics of dry needle felting from start to finish, then will experiment with adding elements to the main project (optional). Our base form will hold up as you embellish it to your heart’s content. Learn this easy and satisfying method of making art. Most people will take the entire class time to complete their projects. No experience necessary.
