  • On September 26, the Harvest Moon will rise over San Diego County, providing a fitting backdrop for the Ilan-Lael Foundation's annual Harvest Moon Fundraiser from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Guests will enjoy rare access to the Ilan-Lael property, the home and creative sanctuary of renowned artist and architect James Hubbell, whose organically designed buildings and landscapes have become a treasured cultural landmark. The event offers visitors the opportunity to explore the grounds at their own pace while enjoying a thoughtfully curated meal prepared by local chefs using seasonal ingredients from the region. This year's featured guest is Ada Limón, who served as the nation's 24th U.S. Poet Laureate. Celebrated for poetry that explores the natural world and humanity's relationship with it, Limón is an especially fitting guest for an evening devoted to art and nature. She will deliver a special reading and reflect on her family’s roots in Julian and Santa Ysabel, where her father has spent years growing apples and pears. The event sells out each year, so early reservations are encouraged. Tickets are $175 per person or $350 per couple. Sponsorship opportunities range from $2,500 to $7,500. To purchase tickets, call the Ilan-Lael Foundation at (760) 765-3427. “Harvest Moon is one of our favorite events of the year as we bring together art enthusiasts, philanthropists and the community,” shares Marianne Gerdes, Executive Director of the Ilan-Lael Foundation. “Throughout the years, the event has continued to grow, but at its core, it celebrates art, nature and the way they intersect.”
  • This August 27, join Library Shop SD at our Mission Hills location for a conversation with Elizabeth DeLozier and KPBS’ Julia Dixon Evans on "The Whitechapel Full Moon Society," the new novel from the author of "Eleanor of Avignon." This event will include a conversation, Q&A, and author signing. Proceeds from all book sales support the San Diego Public Library. ABOUT THE BOOK Set in Victorian London during Jack the Ripper’s reign of terror, this gripping, original novel is perfect for fans of V. E. Schwab, Dana Schwartz, and Sarah Penner. When Caroline Foster arrives at the Whitechapel Full Moon Society in search of her missing brother, she finds a dilapidated façade belying an interior as opulent as any exclusive gentlemen’s club. In exchange for room and board, Caroline is hired as the Full Moon’s maid, where she is given three orders: don’t ask personal questions, stay out of the iron-barred room on the second floor, and remain in her bedroom from sunup to sundown on the full moon. But when it is revealed that the previous maid was murdered— an early victim of Jack the Ripper— and her brother has left behind no answers, only more questions, Caroline begins to suspect her hosts might be hiding something. As more bodies turn up with a connection to the Society, Caroline fears she may have unwittingly stumbled into a bedtime story, the kind with monsters and curses, family secrets and ancient lore. Tantalizing and pulsing, Elizabeth DeLozier’s sophomore novel gives an exciting alternative look into the infamous Jack the Ripper story with a major, supernatural twist. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS Elizabeth DeLozier holds a BA in Spanish literature, a BS in biological anthropology, and a doctorate in physical therapy. A practicing pelvic floor physical therapist, chaotic Virgo, and vegetarian, she lives in San Diego with her husband, twin sons and rescue dogs. Julia Dixon Evans hosts KPBS’ arts and culture podcast, "The Finest," writes the KPBS Arts newsletter, produces and edits the KPBS/Arts Calendar and works with the KPBS team to cover San Diego’s diverse arts scene. Previously, Julia wrote the weekly Culture Report for Voice of San Diego and has reported on arts, culture, books, music, television, dining, the outdoors and more for The A.V. Club, Literary Hub and San Diego CityBeat. She studied literature at UCSD (where she was an oboist in the La Jolla Symphony), and is a published novelist and short fiction writer.
