State water officials say this is shaping up to be one of the driest winters on record.
A monthly survey by hydrologists shows that the snow pack near Echo Summit is less than 2 feet with a water content of 8 inches. That's only 37 percent of normal. But Don Strickland with the state Department of Water Resources says it's too early to talk about drought.
Strickland: Normally we don't start getting too concerned about drought conditions until we have at least two years of very dry weather back to back. We still have a chance of course to turn around this winter, you never know what the weather's going to do.
News of the dismal snow pack comes in the wake of today's international report on global warming. But Strickland says department scientists don't think the current dry spell is related to climate change.
