Schwarzenegger Recommends You Light No Fireworks This July 4th

The mercury is expected to top 100 degrees in some parts of the state this July 4th holiday. That has officials worried about the potential for more fires -- and the effect on people's health. As Marianne Russ reports, the governor is urging caution.

With the Lake Tahoe fire now fully contained, fire officials says there are plenty of crews primed and ready for July 4th. Over the past three weeks, they've seized 150 tons of illegal fireworks coming into the state. Even the legal kind -- those that don't explode or leave the ground -- aren't legal everywhere in California.

Governor Schwarzenegger says you're better off skipping it entirely:

Schwarzenegger : I personally will recommend for people not to use fireworks, because you never know what will happen. So many of the fires are caused by people, I think you have to be very cautious.

Schwarzenegger is also urging caution in the expected triple-digit heat. He says the state plans to open cooling centers. Last year several people died in a heat wave.

Officials are also working on a public education campaign and an 800 number for heat-related information.
