Grocers Optimistic About Union Negotiation After July 4 Recess

Grocers and union officials were back at the bargaining table on Monday in an effort to hammer out a new contract for the region's three largest grocery chains.  The two sides are back from a five-day break that began on July 4.

Adena Tessler works for the grocery chains Vons, Ralph's, and Albertsons. She says the fact that the two sides are talking should be seen as positive.

Tessler : A lot of the non-economic parts of the contract -- the gap has been closed on those items, and now we're dealing with funding for health care and other wage issues.

The unions and grocers took a break from talks on July 4 after negotiating for seven straight days. That week-long session came after union members gave their leaders authority to call for a strike at Ralph's and Vons stores.
