A wildfire that began in Mexico spread north across the U.S. border Wednesday, burning over more than 1,100 acres of rugged terrain in southeastern San Diego County.

The remote area east of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is home to wild bighorn sheep - and little else.

None of the animals were known to have been injured in the blaze, though it was eating its way through their food supply, said California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Darrin Howell.

About 150 firefighters from CDF, the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management were working with Mexican counterparts to contain the fire. About 500 acres burned south of the border.

Full containment was expected Thursday, Howell said.

The cause of the fire, which broke out in Mexico on Tuesday, was not known, Howell said.
