Governor Proposes More Education Funding, Massive Welfare Cuts

California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is proposing a slightly larger state budget than the one he unveiled in January. The newly revised spending plan includes more money for education. However, the fiscal blueprint fails to fix the fact that California spends more money than it takes in.

Schwarzenegger promised to fix the structural deficit when he took office.

Schwarzenegger : I have an obligation, which is a promise to the people of California that I will bring down this structural deficit to zero, and that we will be fiscally responsible. So there is two choices: one is to create extra revenue through all the various different means that I have proposed, or the other one is to go and start making those cuts.

Schwarzenegger reiterated his January proposal to cut $500 million from the state's welfare system. Democrats immediately blasted the proposed cuts, accusing Schwarzenegger of bowing to Wall Street pressure at the expense of the state's neediest children and families.
