KPBS Commentaries

Update from Tom Fudge

Dear KPBS Listeners:

Tom Fudge here. I hope that most of you know that I'm the host of "These Days" on KPBS, and that I've been absent from the airwaves for several weeks. At KPBS, we've received many e-mails and calls from listeners wondering what's going on and asking where I've been. I've decided it's time for me to write a personal note of explanation.

On April 16, I was cycling to work when I was hit by a car. My bicycle did not survive the accident. As for me... I was left a bit of a wreck. My body made hard contact with the car that hit me. That day, I ended up in intensive care, and I was hospitalized for more than a week.

Today, I'm happy to report that my doctors expect me to completely recover. The question of when I'll be back hosting "These Days" again is a bit hard to answer. I very much miss my work at KPBS. I miss my relationship with our listeners and I'd love to be back at work tomorrow. But my doctors expect my recovery to take a bit longer than that. I will say that I fully expect to be back in the host's chair sometime early this summer.

I want to thank you all for being KPBS listeners, and I hope you will look forward to hearing me again in the "These Days" host chair. Above all, I want to thank the many of you who have sent heartfelt e-mails and letters that have wished me well during this difficult time. I consider myself so lucky to have survived a serious traffic accident, and to have so many kind people express their sympathy to me. I can only feel humble, grateful, and very fortunate to be alive in the fellowship of such outstanding fellow humans.

I can tell you that I am feeling better every day, and each day I look forward to the time when I can once again lend my voice to the discussion of our community's present and future. Thanks again for your kind thoughts and words of concern. We'll be in touch over the airwaves again quite soon.

-Tom Fudge

Hey Tom, glad to hear from you. I was wondering where you were. I spoke a couple of times with you in the air and got used to hear your voice every morning at work. I know you will be back soon and we will be waiting for you. Meanwhile, hang in there! Try to see positive things, spend time with your family, read, medidate, listen to some music, whatever it is that you like to do. Try new things! Sometimes we don't know why things happens to us and we might ask: why me? Believe it or not we are always here to learn something even with the most painful experiences in our lives. Those are the ones that make us stronger and realize the value of life, family and friends. You've got friends, here! I'll be thinking of you healed and will be sending you some good energy . Peace!

America's finest city my A**! Tom -- I was *AGHAST* when I heard what happened to you. Here you are doing your best to be eco-friendly, health-conscious, green and all that. And along comes some 2-ton SUV driven by a driver who may or may not have been on a cellphone -- but eitherway she wasn't paying attention -- and nearly cut down San Diego's most prominent mouthpiece on the issues! And nearly left a family fatherless! >> Woe to this city of fools!!!

Pedestrian and cyclist safety is an afterthought -- meanwhile we're adding a 9th and 10th lane to every major highway so that soon they'll be wide enough to land 747's on. And cycling -- the most sensible of all possible transportation choices -- will continue to be a deathwish. I'm p*ssed. And Tom -- when you're back, let's do something about it, my brutha!

I'm glad to hear you are in good spirits and recovering well. I was cycling down Montezuma road that morning and saw the police activity on the other side of the road. Later in the day I found out it was you from the San Diego Bicycle Coalition BBS. Take care. Judging from the response you have lots of friends here that you've never met. Count me as one of them.

So nice for you to connect with us again Tom, you know many freinds are thinking of you. You were never a one issue person and though bicycling advocacy is important to me I hope you are able to bring the meaningful discussions to the largest audience possible as you know how to do so well. As for bicycling advocacy, I don't know what you could possibly do to further make your point. Thank you for the positive example.

Tom, You are an uncompromising voice for fairness and accuracy in the local media. You hold a unique position in that regard. You are an example of a well-prepared, open-minded, knowledgeable journalist; who does an outstanding job moderating "These Days";-- you've got the touch of a true pro!~!! Were there more journalists (newspaper, TV, radio, net)like you in San Diego, journalism would take a great leap forward locally. Your absence creates a major journalistic vacuum in SD. Greg Duch

Hey Tom, I am very grateful that you are recovering! I have had the honor and pleasure of being interviewed by you twice, and you are indeed a great role model, and a quiet leader in our community. When I was 20 (many decades ago!) I too was hit by a car while riding my bike. Although my injuries were nowhere as bad as yours, to this day, I still cannot get on a bike without feeling nervous. I hope you will not have the same problem next time you go for a ride! I hope your recovery is swift, and remember that there are thousands of people in the KPBS audience/family that await you return!!!

Dear Tom, You are really missed. Hearing your voice in the morning has been an enjoyable and familiar part of my day for years and the radio waves aren't the same without you. Your work is very much appreciated. I like your thoughtful analysis when you introduce a guest and you're always so well prepared on a wide range of subjects. I can tell you do quite a bit of research and you make it appear effortless. Additionally, you are well reasoned and fair with guests of varying perspectives as well as giving time to people calling in to voice & vent their views, (even when they're not as always as respectful as you are to them). I'm sure this is not always an easy task and a more like a balancing act. I'm always glad to hear your feedback and opinions on the issues, especially regarding the environment. I am grateful that you are recovering and that you will be back soon. You are missed more than words can adequately express. Wishing you and your family the best. Respectfully Yours, Andrea Walsh

Wow. Cycling is the most dangerous thing I do. I'm over in Osaka, Japan, a flat city with great bicycle access lanes, but, you know where the "kamikaze" came from! Anyway, as a former San Diego teacher, I feel right at home listening to you. I even almost gagged on my sushi when I heard you take a call from a close friend of mine a couple of weeks back. It's become such a small world, and you're a key part of that for me. I thank you for your great talents and hope you're back in the saddle real soon.

Hello, Tom ~ I'm glad and relieved to hear you're on the mend -- your injuries must have been terribly serious. For me, the bitter irony is that you have paid such a high price for doing what we should all be doing -- moving our lives into a simpler, less voracious and rapacious relationship with Earth. I hope some good will come of this, even if only in small measure. Perhaps more people will slow down, recognize each other, and treat everything and everyone with care and respect, not only on the street, but everywhere. Is this too much to expect? Yes. Should we expect anything less? No. Best wishes to you!

Best wishes for your recovery, Tom. As an avid bicycle commuter of over 30 years, it always saddens me to hear of bike accidents--another brother bicyclists has gone down! In writing this note, the thought occurred that perhaps later when you've healed you might consider doing some shows about bike-commuting in town: the joys (the bennies of regular exercise for one), the hazards involved and what's being done to improve the situation. One thing's for sure, you've got to be real dedicated to want to be out there joining other folks on spokes. For now, please know you're in the thoughts of many who are sending their wishes for your return to the airwaves, and hopefully, resuming bicycle commuting when you're able. Take care, Skip Shaputnic

Tom, We do miss you and are looking forward to your return. There has to be at least 2 or 3 good shows out of this experience. I for one am curious about bicycles and their future alongside city traffic. Warren Olney's at KCRW had a good segment on it recently as it pertained to LA. Also I would be interested in hearing about this life changing experience in terms of a personal reflection. But above all else, many best wishes for a full and speedy recovery!

My husband was hit by a car. His bicycle helmet saved his life, his head hit a metal guard rail. But to me the biggest issue this brings up is the lack of bicycle safety in San Diego County. We need more bicycle awareness, more bike lanes, and stiffer fines for people who hit bicyclists!

Hi Tom- I hope this finds you fully recovered and doing well. You probably do not remember me. I moved to San Diego in 1969 as a senior at Orange Glen High School. I had lived in Placerville CA all of my life attending a very small school with people I had grown up with most of whom I am related to. I was so overwhelmed when I moved to Escondido. You were the first person who made an effort to make me feel comfortable. You invited me to a homecomming dance. When you picked me up I was dressed in what generations of Placerville girls wear for the annual Homecomming dance. Some may call it "Hill billy chic". You were dressed California Casual. I knew I had made a big mistake and wanted to change. But being the gentleman you are you complemeted me and off we went. I danced the night away with you in your beach boy surfer shorts along side pretty blonde girls in their surfer wear, wearing my hand-me down brocaid prom dress with my very high hair-do. You were a true gentleman and at the age of seventeen it means even more. Being the mother of 3 boys I have told this story a few times. Fortunatley my sons are kind loving young men. Just like you, Tom. I hope this finds you in good health, knowing that your kindness has touched someone and you've been thought of many times over the years. If you are ever in Northern California please give us a call. Gigi Ronzone-Gay (800) 248-3555

Tom: You had a golden opportunity to question James Watson about Roslind Franklin but, because you did not do your homework, you blew it. Frontline aired a terrific program about three years ago revealing how Watson and Cricht (I can't remember his name) stole Ms. Franklin's research which led to their breakthrough on DNA. They were stymied until the saw her work. They never gave her any credit and only after the expose did they even mention her. Mr. Watson's self serving reference to the fact that she did not blame them because she came to stay with Cricht when she was dying is ridiculous. She never knew they had used her research. I hope you can get a copy of the frontline programme. You will really enjoy it. I do enjoy your program. It is always interesting and enlightening. I'm glad you have made such a good recovery from your awful accident. Margaret Rehm
