Poll: Locals Wary Soaring College Costs Reinforce Class Divide

A new poll of California residents finds many people are worried about getting themselves or their children into college. The Public Policy Institute of California polled more than 2,500 state residents in an effort to gauge attitudes about college.

The Institute's Mark Baldesarre says two-thirds of Californians believe a college degree is necessary for success, but they think higher education is out of reach of most people.   He says the biggest concern is how expensive a college education is.

Baldesarre : They said it was the cost. And when we asked people how much of a problem was the affordability of education today -- a majority of Californians described it as a big problem.

Almost 85 percent of those polled say it’s difficult to pay for college because it’s expensive. Many also think the cost of higher education is rising faster than other costs.
