100s of Extra Students Prompt Hurried Supply Shipment to Lincoln

A large shipment of school supplies is on its way to San Diego's Lincoln High School a week after the campus was publicly criticized for having too many kids and not enough materials to go around. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

School district warehouse workers shrink-wrap more than half-a-million-dollars of science equipment and materials. All these boxes will soon be hauled away to Lincoln, the newest and most prominent San Diego high school. The district is also streamlining the hiring process so Lincoln can bring in up to 12 new teachers.

Principal Mel Collins says the shortfalls happened as a result of inaccurate enrollment projections, a cumbersome ordering process and a tight opening-day deadline.

Collins : I don't point fingers, because I don't know who to point the finger at. And I could care less in this point in time; all I care about now is getting those pallets and getting all of that science equipment so that teachers can have it.

Roughly 2,200 students are enrolled at Lincoln, 400 more than anticipated.
