Economic Briefs For and Against Powerlink Proposal Filed Today

San Diego Gas and Electric wants to build a transmission project that would stretch 150 miles from the Imperial Valley to San Diego. People for and against the Sunrise Powerlink project filed briefs with a state regulator today. KPBS reporter Ed Joyce has details.

The briefs contain arguments both for and against the Sunrise Powerlink . It's a part of the application process for the SDG&E project.

Michael Shames with the Utility Consumers' Action Network says this phase deals with the economic benefits of the Powerlink.

Shames : Whether the line is needed, whether it really does bring in the renewable power that SDG&E claims. So this phase, probably the biggest phase, really deals with those complex issues.

UCAN opposes the Sunrise project. Shames says it's too expensive for ratepayers. San Diego Gas and Electric says the 500 kilovolt transmission line is needed by 2010 to ensure electricity reliability to the area and to reduce energy costs.

The company also says the Powerlink will allow it to purchase renewable energy.
