S.D. Red Cross Bracing for the Worst

There are three shelter sites set-up for folks who have been evacuated by the twin fires. For people affected in the East County, there are two site: Steele Canyon High School on Campo Road in Spring Valley, and the Campo Community Center on Sheridan Road in Campo.

For people affected by the fire in the North County, there is one site: Poway High School on Espola Road.

Red Cross spokeswoman Gayle Galkenthal says the organization is bracing for the worst. She says emergency teams learned a lot from the fires that ravaged the county four years ago almost to the date.

Falkenthal: When you do have a disasterous event like the Cedar and the Paradise fires, you learn a lot in terms of better staging better organization, very well trained volunteers. It was literally a trial by fire for hundreds of our volunteers who know better now what to do, and can even respond more quickly to meet the needs of the people out in the community.

Falkenthal expects the number of people to grow at all three sites this evening. More than a dozen volunteers have been dispatched to the shelters. The Red Cross says they're monitoring the situation in case they need to boost that number.
