KPBS reporter Nicole Lozare spent the morning at Qualcomm Stadium. Evacuees are saying their immediate needs are being met.
There are cots, mattresses. One man was sleeping on a donated futon.
There are hot meals and sandwiches. No pre-packaged cold food yet for this crowd. And there's still plenty of coffee.
But for emotional comfort, the evacuees have turned to each other.
A sense of community has emerged. The Fallbrook folks have set up camp near each other. Spanish-only speakers are in another part of the stadium.
Betty Newell who evacuated from Rancho Bernardo says her spirits are up thanks to the kind gesture of another evacuee.
Newell : She was gone about an hour. They had to stand in line all this time to bring food for a total stranger. I thought that was a pretty kind thing to do.
Crisis counseling is available. FEMA is there too.
